Adrenal Gland Fatigue

Use an Adrenal Fatigue Diet

What is adrenal gland fatigue? We are overstressed, overfed and under exercised. Learn about symptoms of adrenal fatigue, treating adrenal fatigue and adrenal fatigue diet and more.

The human body is built for survival. It is meant to handle physical and emotional stress quite well. In fact, we have an incredible stress modulation system in place and it’s controlled by the adrenal glands. Actually, adrenalin and other hormones is what gave the ancient caveman the quick energy for fight or flight when faced with a Saber-tooth tiger.

However, today we live in very different times. We face stresses, poor nutrition and, unlike our ancestor the cave man, we are overfed and under exercised. These circumstances, and probably environmental toxins, all take a toll on our adrenal glands and prevent them from working properly...resulting in adrenal gland fatigue.

About the Adrenal Glands

We have two adrenal glands that are triangular-shaped and located on the top of each kidney.

The adrenal glands are small -- about 3 inches wide, and a half inch high. They consist of two parts, the cortex outer part and the medulla which is the inner part that secrets different hormones.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue?

As stated earlier, when the adrenal glands are not working optimally, it often results in a condition called adrenal fatigue, or adrenal exhaustion. Adrenal fatigue often develops after prolonged periods of intense physical or emotional stress. Eventually, the adrenal glands are unable to meet the body's needs.

A more serious, chronic version of adrenal fatigue is known as Addison's disease. This is where the glands are damaged and do not produce enough hormones. Addison’s disease affects one in four of every 100,000 people.

Adrenal fatigue syndrome include:

  • Extreme fatigue and exhaustion
  • Tendency to gain weight especially around the waist
  • Depression/sadness
  • Feeling lightheaded when getting up
  • Non-refreshing sleep (waking up exhausted )
  • Unable to cope with stress
  • Feeling overwhelmed or rundown
  • Craving salty, sweet, or caffeinated foods
  • Low stamina or unable to recover from exercise
  • Difficulty concentrating feeling foggy
  • Poor digestion, or constant indigestion
  • Low immune function, always getting sick
  • Very low blood pressure

While conventional medicine can test and diagnose Addision’s disease, it is difficult to diagnose adrenal fatigue because medical tests are only prepared only to diagnose extreme dysfunction in the adrenals. However, a holistic practitioner can perform a cortisol/saliva test to evaluate your adrenal gland function.

If you suspect that you might be suffering from adrenal gland fatigue, here are few health tips for the treatment of adrenal gland fatigue that might help you feel better.

Adrenal fatigue diet - When the adrenal glands are constantly forced to respond to stress you often burn many necessary nutrients - creating a nutritional void. Good quality food is important to replace these nutrients. Treating adrenal gland fatigue with diet and supplements has had good results.

Adrenal Fatigue Supplements - Vitamins

B Complex - Try getting enough B complex in your diet, whether from food or from supplements. The vitamin B complex includes niacin, thiamine, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and vitamins B6 and B12.

These are all important for supporting many critical functions of the body, but especially for the nervous system. B5 (pantothenic acid) is especially necessary from dealing with stress because it enhances the activity of the adrenal glands and increases energy levels. The entire B vitamin family work together to support a healthy nervous system and metabolism.

Adrenal Fatigue Supplements - Herbs

Siberian Ginseng - Ginseng is what of the most important herbs for adrenal gland fatigue support. known to support energy levels, healthy circulation and as a nerve tonic for healthy adrenal glands. It helps increase stamina and fitness. (Phytother Res. 2000 Feb; 14(1): 30-5).
