Baby Teething Symptoms

What's the Average Baby Teething Age?

What are baby teething symptoms (such as baby teething fever, crying, crankiness and more), and how different are they from colic? What is the average baby teething age? What are some effective, natural baby teething remedies?

The Average Baby Teething Age

Babies start working on their first tooth at around three to four months of age, and teething continues to about two years old.

Teeth generally come in the following order: the two lower middle teeth, then the four top, middle teeth, then the incisors, and finally the molars.

Typically, the first four to six teeth seem to be the hardest and then the molars.

It's likely that the first teeth are the hardest because you are also learning how to recognize baby teething symptoms and handle your baby's pain, crying and crankiness - once you develop some remedies and techniques to help your baby, it will become easier (not easy) for baby, and you.

Baby Teething Symptoms: Is There a Relationship to Colic?

What are common baby teething symptoms? It's important to understand what the symptoms of baby teething are because if you recognize teething symptoms then you can try to help your baby get through the teething experience. Some symptoms might be very similar to cold, flu and/or colic symptoms - ensure that you understand what's causing the symptoms for effective treatment.

Is there a relationship between colic and teething? Both cause babies some distress and cause crying, crankiness and sleeplessness. The cause of colic has not been positively identified; in fact some doctors don't believe in colic.

However many parents report symptoms of colic; and these symptoms seem to link to an immature digestive system that is aggravated by crying (and swallowing air), as well as some foods such as milk. Colic can be triggered when your baby is teething because of the crying, drooling, and general upset that teething causes.

Baby Teething Symptoms:

  • Excessive drooling, which can also cause a rash around the baby's mouth;
  • A runny nose can often be a side effect of teething;
  • Crying and fussiness;
  • Interrupted sleep; the teething pain often keeps baby awake;
  • Some babies will suffer from baby teething fever; if your baby develops a fever, visit your doctor as it could be a symptom of another problem. Make sure that your baby is getting enough fluid. Some babies don't want to eat or drink when teething because it hurts! And some babies will drink a bit and then push away because their gums are too sore;
  • Swollen and red gums; if you look at the gums closely, you can often see the white of the tooth as it starts to get close to breaking through the gum;

Your baby will likely want to chew or gnaw on something (their little fists are often found in their mouths when teething); while they have that urge to chew, it can also cause more pain and discomfort until the tooth actually breaks through the gum.

Baby Teething Remedies

Discuss all remedies with your doctor before you try them: some baby teething remedies will not be effective for your baby, while others will - you will need to find what works best.

  • Try a cold baby teething ring: you can find the rings in most pharmacies, some grocery stores, and baby stores. Buy a ring that can be refrigerated or frozen; the cold will help take the swelling down.
  • Rub a drop of pure vanilla extract on your baby's gums. The rubbing may help soothe, the alcohol in the extract may provide some numbness, and vanilla has some calming properties, as well as help with stomach problems (that are caused by crying and upset).
  • A drop of clove oil is known to work in similar ways (to vanilla extract). Do not over use clove oil, it can upset baby's tummy.
  • Baby cookies can help; they are often a hard cookie that the baby can gum and that will help with the urge to chew. Do not give young babies cookies - they need to be at least six months of age and you always need to be close to your baby and watch how the cookie is breaking down (so that baby doesn't choke).
  • Cold foods (such as cold pureed peaches and other fruits) will help to cool the swollen gums. You may want to use a sturdy plastic spoon for feeding instead of metal - the metal might hurt your baby's swollen and inflamed gums.

Product Recommendations:
For Baby Teething Symptoms and Treatment

OralSoothe is a natural, healthy product to relieve teething pain and reduce your baby's crying and crankiness. Use OralSoothe directly on your baby's gums, and particularly before night time.

We also recommend using a baby massage oil: Blissful Baby Aromatic Massage Oil to improve circulation, soothe skin irritations and promote relaxation in babies. Massaging your baby through stressful times will help her, or him, to relax and to calm down (and that will help you to relax too).
