Canker Sore Home Remedy

Canker Sores in the Mouth Can Be Painful

What is an effective canker sore home remedy? Canker sores in the mouth are unpleasant and painful. What is a canker sore? Canker sore cures and treatments to help relief the pain.

Canker sores are not contagious (like cold sores) however they can be sore and painful.

Canker sores in the mouth are often a result of a minor cut or abrasion in the mouth (through dental work, sports activities, braces, an inadvertent poke with your toothbrush). They can also result after eating highly acidic and/or spicy foods. A canker sore home remedy will shorten the 'life-cycle' of the sore, not eliminate it entirely: prevention is the best cure.

What is a Canker Sore?

It looks like a blister but is not; it has a white or yellow center with a red border. It is usually somewhat circular in appearance and is most commonly found on the inside of the mouth (inside the lip or on the cheek); some canker sores will appear on the edge of the tongue, often where the tongue touches braces or the raw edge of a newly filled cavity.

These sores can be painful and irritating and make eating and drinking quite uncomfortable. They usually go away on their own in ten to fourteen days (if not, visit your doctor for an assessment).

Canker Sore Causes and Canker Sore Cures

What is the cause of canker sores? Often connected to a weakened immune system, canker sores appear most often when you are over tired, stressed, and/or eat a poor nutrition diet. A canker sore home remedy is as much about prevention as it is about canker sore cures.

  • Hormonal fluctuations appear to have an impact as well, making women more susceptible to canker sores than men.
  • There is also a suspicion that canker sores might be an allergic reaction to certain foods; if you get canker sores on a recurring, regular basis start keeping track of the foods you eat; you may be able to eliminate the problem easily (by eliminating the food you are allergic to).
  • Canker sore cures are limited, primarily because the sores are inside your mouth. Try sucking on an ice cube to cool your mouth and reduce the redness and swelling.
  • Do not eat very hot foods or drink hot beverages if you have a canker sore.
  • Do not eat spicy foods as the spices can aggravate the sore and actually result in a larger problem.
  • Do rinse your mouth at least a couple of times during the day with luke warm and salty water.
  • There appears to be a link with canker sores and alcohol and smoking; stop your bad habits and see if it has a positive effect.
  • Take two aspirin or ibuprofen for pain relief.
  • Drink lots of water to flush the toxins out of your system.
  • Make sure that you eat a nutrition-filled diet, and take a multiple vitamin for the duration of the canker sore (and longer if you fill you need some added vitamins).
  • Deal with stress through relaxation techniques and work on building the mental strength to work through stressful situations so that they don’t impact on your body’s health.
