Different Types Of HeadachesCauses and Symptoms:
|
|||
There are many different types of headaches. What causes headache symptoms depends a lot on the kind of headache you have because occipital headache and sinus headache symptoms and causes are quite different from each other and from migraine headache causes, for example.
Let's take a closer look at what causes headache problems in many people.
The National Headache Foundation tells us that millions of Americans have serious or chronic headaches. Nearly half of those individuals get occipital headaches or migraines headaches. However, the average person on the street really doesn't recognize the different types of headaches or underlying causes - they just want relief!
Even so, effective headache relief often can't be found if you're not sure about what you're dealing with. While there are actually hundreds of headaches that you could get, that list can be narrowed to a few that most people experience in their lifetimes.
For example, in our multi-tasking society, lots of individuals experience tension headaches. When you're under stress you hold your head and body differently. You might also squint your eyes to concentrate. All of this can lead to muscle contractions and a subsequent headache that may get worse as the day wears on.
An occipital headache occurs at the back or base of the head and often involves neck pain. This headache can be caused by vascular problems, injuries, blood pressure issues, and poor circulation. If you suspect an occipital headache, visit your doctor immediately.
If you get migraines regularly, the cause may be in your genes. Studies show that individuals whose family members get migraines are at a much higher risk of developing them.
Other triggers that cause different types of headaches include stress, sickness, certain medications, allergies, sleep disorders/disruption, eye strain, lifestyle changes, and diet.
Migraine headache symptoms are a challenge to diagnose. A migraine is more severe than a tension headache and some people have ones that last for days!
Along with the pain in your head, migraines can cause a person to feel nauseous, become hyper-light or odor sensitive, experience dizziness, and even have trouble focusing their vision. Some unfortunate individuals have been known to get tension headaches and migraines at the same time (ouch!).
Another headache category is called a cluster headache. This isn't something everyone experiences, which is good considering it commons with a lot of pain. It's almost as if someone was jabbing a poker in a location near the eye. The pain will last for a bit, and then disappear, only to reappear several times on the same day. This whole process can go on for months.
Another common headache among the different types of headaches comes from sinus problems. This headache centers behind the nose or forehead, and typically has other sinus problems that accompany it (like nasal drip). It's not unusual for a person with a sinus headache to feel like their face is puffy around the cheeks as well. The cause of sinus headaches is typically a sinus infection.
Finally among women hormonal headaches are pretty well known. These appear pre-menstruation, when a woman becomes pregnant or during perimenopause (and menopause).
If you have severe or chronic headaches your physician may want you to see a specialist in the field. Most common headaches, however, respond well to over-the-counter medication, massage, rest, and/or stress-management.
