Home Remedies

Hello. An older person was telling me about a home remedy used in the 1930s and 40s called (not sure of the spelling) assaficidy.

Have you ever heard of this home remedy? It was used for everything and was supposed to be really useful for getting rid of toxins in the system. It was a tar or sap like substance, dark brown or black in color. I'm really interested in finding out more about this natural old home remedy.

Looking forward to your response!

Response from Natural Old Home Remedies:

Thanks for your email. Can you give us more information on this all purpose home remedy? Any information you can provide will help us with our research.

Update: We haven't heard back from our request for more information however we think that this might be a request for information about a root called Sarsaparilla.

The Sarsaparilla plant was very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

It is believed to be have useful for a wide variety of health issues: a good blood thinner and tonic; good for hair re-growth; apparently considered to be very good at removing toxins from the system; an anti-inflammatory; a muscle builder; and more. There have not been any recent reports on the use of this plant as an effective home remedy however that could simply be because it seems to have become less popular and less well-known over time.

It was very popularly used in drinks (root beer) in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s and was made into a paste that was a dark brown color (which kind of sounds very similar to what you describe in your question). It is still possible to find Sarsaparilla soft drinks in the United States but you really have to look for it - they just aren't as popular as they used to be.

It is easier to find Sarsaparilla Root tea and/or supplements in health food stores these days.

Hope this is the information is useful and it's what you were looking for - we couldn't find anything on a remedy called 'assaficidy'
