How To Lower Blood Pressure Naturally?

What is Good Blood Pressure?

How to lower blood pressure, naturally? What is hypertension? High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can result in serious medical issues. What is good blood pressure and how is it controlled?

Many people with high blood pressure don’t know they have it. To check for blood pressure, you should have a doctor or nurse take the reading: it is a two-number result.

To check your blood pressure regularly, you can try to find a local drug store with a do-it-yourself blood pressure machine - for free. Or you can buy (and often claim the expense for reimbursement by your health plan provider) an at-home blood pressure monitor.

The first number in a blood pressure reading is the systolic pressure (it reports how hard the heart is beating) and the second number is the diastolic pressure (it reports the heart’s resting rate).

An average or normal reading is 120/80 (described as 120 over 80). Check with your doctor for what is normal for you - the range may vary according to your fitness, height, weight, and overall health.

How to Lower Blood Pressure - What is Hypertension?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, in the early stages is a reading of 140 to 159 systolic; 90 to 99 diastolic. A blood pressure reading greater than 160 systolic and 100 or higher is considered high level and medically significant.

How to Lower Blood Pressure - Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

One of the difficulties with high blood pressure is that it doesn’t present with obvious symptoms in the early stages. As blood pressure rises, symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nose bleeds, and/or extreme tiredness.

High blood pressure can lead to heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, blood circulation issues, and more. It is a serious health issue.

How to Lower Blood Pressure - Causes of High Blood Pressure

Often high blood pressure is the result of a number of factors:

  • Being overweight - it is harder for blood to flow through the body and there is more pressure on your arteries;
  • Poor physical condition and a lack of activity - your heart works harder with each contraction;
  • Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs (non-medicinal) - can cause damage to arteries and increase risk of heart disease;
  • Unmanaged stress - we all encounter stress in our everyday lives; how we manage stress is important in managing our blood pressure;
  • Age: high blood pressure is more common in older people;
  • Too much salt (sodium) causes fluid retention and high blood pressure. Too little potassium can result in high sodium levels because potassium and sodium need to balance each other;
  • Genetics - if there is a family history of high blood pressure, it is more likely that you may be susceptible.

High blood pressure can also be related to other issues (such as thyroid disease and hormone problems) and a side effect of some drugs. It is also a symptom or early warning signal in strokes or mini strokes.

How To Lower Blood Pressure, Naturally?

You need to get medical advice if you are diagnosed with high blood pressure. You will likely need to take medication to lower your blood pressure. But there are additional, natural remedies you can take to manage high blood pressure issues:

  • Garlic in its raw form (in food) or in supplement form can help reduce blood pressure and thin the blood. (Advise your doctor that you are taking garlic - there may be a reaction to other drugs the doctor has prescribed.)
  • Omega-3 (found in fish oil) has been reported to be beneficial in lowering high blood pressure (and contributes to a healthy ‘good’ cholesterol).
  • Folic acid (found in dark green vegetables like spinach and broccoli) has been reported to be beneficial in lowering high blood pressure.
  • Ensure that you are eating enough calcium in your foods (supplements do not appear to be as effective in lowering blood pressure).
  • Use polyunsaturated fats in your cooking (for example, safflower oil or canola oil).
  • Celery is considered beneficial in lowering blood pressure; it contains a phytochemical, 3-N-butylphthalide, that lowers stress hormones and therefore helps to lower blood pressure naturally.
  • Eat less salt - high sodium diets are not good for you. And balance your salt intake with potassium intake - eat bananas, cantaloupe, kiwi, milk, oranges, spinach, tomatoes, and lean meats, poultry and fish.
  • Cayenne pepper is believed to help with the early stages of high blood pressure as it allows the blood to flow better by preventing platelets to clump together. Add cayenne pepper to your food, or drink a daily ‘cocktail’ of cayenne pepper (1/2 tsp), blackstrap molasses (1 tbsp) and apple cider vinegar (1 to 2 tbsp) or try a natural pill that combines cayenne pepper, grapefruit and apple cider vinegar.
  • Herbs like Hawthorn, Passion Flower, Guelder Rose bark, and Maidenhair Tree can help maintain healthy blood pressure and support cardiac and circulatory health. You can find these herbs in the perfect combination and dosage in a 100% natural, non-addictive herbal remedy formulated by a team of natural health experts.
