Inner Ear Infection Symptoms

Home Remedies for Ear Infections

Inner ear infection symptoms include pain, a feeling of pressure, swelling, and fever in more advanced cases. Ear infection treatments include both commercial and home remedies for ear infections.

Note: While ear infections are more common in children, adults can also get painful ear infections.

Ear infections are serious, and if left untreated, can result in loss of hearing and other additionally serious health issues. In particular, inner ear infection symptoms will signal potentially serious issues.

As with all infections, it is important to treat ear infections early on; the sooner you begin treatment the shorter the infection cycle.

However if this is a viral infection then you will likely need to wait out the cycle of healing (can be 10 to 15 days), along with a visit to your doctor, medicine and/or home remedy treatments for ear infection.

Inner Ear Infection Symptoms

Symptoms include one, or more, of the following:

  • Temporary hearing loss or hardness of hearing
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea in some cases
  • Feeling of pressure in the ear
  • Swelling, irritation, heat in, or around, the ear
  • Fever
  • Pain in the ear, and around the ear (along the glands and the jaw)

Potential Causes of Ear Infections

Bacteria in the inner ear; for example, water or fluid in the ear (from the shower or from swimming; often called swimmer's ear). The bacteria can cause an infection, leading to swelling and blockage, and then to more fluid build up, and a more serious infection.

Bacteria can also enter the ear by blowing your nose; mucous can be 'blown' into the Eustachian tube. Ear infections can also be the result of viral infection.

Take preventative actions; particularly if you have recurring infections. Consider that allergies may result in ear infections and try to minimize contact with dairy products if you are allergic to dairy, which can also result in congestion. Don't smoke; it can aggravate sensitive ears.

Natural Old Home Remedies for Ear Infections

Ear infections need to be treated early for the most effective result.

  • 1 drop of white vinegar and 1 drop of water. Mix. 1 drop into the ear. Twice a day.
  • Mullein oil is recommended by many as an effective treatment.
  • Garlic oil has also been used for treating ear infections.
  • If you're at the start of an infection try a double dose of Vitamin C (up to 1000 mg time-release pills; once a day).

Note: Some times ear irritation can be eczema in the ear - not an infection. For eczema, take a cotton ball or q-tip, dip into a drop or two of olive oil and gently apply to the ear. Do this for a couple of days and see if there is an improvement.

Visit your medical doctor to ensure that the ear infection treatments are the right 'prescription' for the illness. Often antibiotics are the common medical treatment; these are effective but often expensive and sometimes unnecessary. Talk to your doctor about home remedies for ear infections.
