Mild Stroke Symptoms and Mini Stroke Symptoms

What is a Stroke?

What is the difference between mild stroke symptoms, mini stroke symptoms and other strokes? What is a stroke? Can the effects of stroke be eliminated through stroke treatments? It’s important to understand the difference between mild stroke symptoms and a stronger, more serious stroke.

Mild Stroke Symptoms - What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when there is an interruption in the blood flow throughout the body and to the brain; that interruption results in damage to brain cells.

That interruption can be caused by plaque or fatty deposit build up from high cholesterol; or be caused through high blood pressure problems (and thick, clotting blood); or be caused through unhealthy heart issues such as atrial fibrillation; an irregular heartbeat that lets blood collect in your heart chambers and affects the blood circulation through your body.

Strokes can be mild or quite serious. Often, a person may have a series of mini or mild strokes (almost as warning systems) before a bigger, more serious incident. However, the individual may not even recognize the warning signal of a mini stroke - or may not take preventative action. This is a mistake.

TIAs and Mild Stroke Symptoms

A mild stroke, or mini stroke, is often a serious, pre-warning of a more significant stroke to come. These mini stroke symptoms are also called transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Generally TIAs do not cause permanent brain damage. It is reported that more than one third of those who have a TIA will have a subsequent stroke.

TIAs are caused by low or impeded blood flow, a blood clot, or a narrowing of an artery for a short period of time.

Mild stroke symptoms often mirror symptoms of a stroke: sudden numbness or weakness of one side of the body or of one arm, leg or side of the face; sudden memory loss, confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden vision focusing or blurring problems; sudden loss of balance, unsteadiness or dizziness.

If you, or someone you are with, are having these symptoms call 911 immediately. Time is of the essence in stroke treatments; the earlier you seek medical attention, the better.

Mild Stroke Symptoms and The Effects of Stroke

A stroke will occur in your brain - it is not a heart attack as some people mistakenly believe, it is a 'brain attack'. There are four primary areas in your brain: the right hemisphere, left hemisphere, the cerebellum and the brain stem.

A stroke in the right hemisphere will affect movement on the left side of your body. It will also affect analytical and perceptual activities. This stroke may also result in judgment issues, short term memory loss and behavioral changes.

A stroke in the left hemisphere will affect movement on the right side of your body and it may result in speech and language difficulties. This stroke may also result in a short term memory loss, a more cautious behavior, and more support through instruction to complete activities.

A stroke in the cerebellum will affect reflexes, balance and coordination. A stroke in the brain stem will have a significant impact on breathing rate, heart beat, eye movement, speech, swallowing and more.

TIA or Mini Stroke Treatments

TIAs or mini strokes are an early warning signal - pay attention to that warning and change your lifestyle in addition to taking prescribed medications. The goal of stroke treatments is prevention.

Diet, exercise, and treatment of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and/or diabetes is necessary in combination. There is no easy prevention or cure: taking pills and still eating poorly is not going to be as beneficial as taking care of your body and your lifestyle.

The most effective treatments are:

  • Quit smoking.
  • Change your diet: a balanced, healthy heart menu and diet - low in sodium, low in fats, high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy, and lean meats.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.
  • Exercise daily: 30 minutes of walking is easy to fit into any day (15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes after work) or set up some exercise equipment at home if you want to exercise on your own schedule.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Take a daily low dose aspirin - advise your doctor you are doing so - to keep your blood thin.
  • Take a daily dose of apple cider vinegar to improve your blood circulation.
The best stroke treatments involve stroke prevention: if you take responsibility for your life and health you can effectively prevent the risk of stroke.

Ask your doctor about the best stroke prevention options for you. Then take responsibility and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The lifestyle adjustments, such as eating healthy foods and quitting smoking, you make today may reduce your stroke risk tomorrow.
