Natural Cough Home Remedies and Natural Cough Suppressants

Use natural cough remedies to treat your coughs and colds. Home remedies for a cough include a natural cough suppressant and methods for decongestant. Natural cough home remedies help you feel better.

Natural cough home remedies will vary depending on the type of cough you have.

If you’re starting to feel that seasonal tickle in your throat, or begin experiencing chest congestion, you may be looking for home remedies for a cough.

Before you start looking through herbal books it’s important to realize that different types of coughing may require somewhat different natural cough syrup or natural cough suppressant solutions.

For the most part, you can make a home remedy for your cough with products that you will already have in your home: vinegar, lemons, honey, water, broths, juices, garlic, and more.

Natural Cough Remedies - Barking Coughs

A barking cough (like the one children with croup experience) is a result of heavy congestion in your throat and lungs. This type of coughing often involves your throat and vocal chords and can make it very hard to breath.

Natural cough home remedies and overall treatment tips for this particular situation include:

  • Sitting in a steamy room or using a vaporizer

  • Hydration: water, hot tea, and fruit juices help transport sickness out of your body. Water also acts as an expectorant.

  • Eat spicy foods (this also opens your sinuses)

  • Make sure your living space is properly humidified. Dry air irritates the cough.

  • Avoid dairy products (they increase mucus)

  • Take a damp towel, warm it carefully in the microwave until steamy, then apply it to your chest (this is a poor man’s hydroculator).

  • Consume foods and beverages high in Vitamins A, C and E

  • Dab a little essential eucalyptus oil on light bulbs near where you sit regularly. Alternatives to eucalyptus include ginger, myrrh, pine and cedar.

  • Warm a cup of honey with the juice of a quarter lemon, juice of a quarter lime, a slice of fresh ginger root, and two tsp. garlic juice. Remove the ginger root and take a tsp. two to three times daily to ease cough. Note this home remedy for coughing makes an excellent chicken glaze too!

  • Take 1 tsp of carrot juice twice daily (preferably juiced fresh daily).

  • Sip broths: onion broth, chicken broth and garlic broth all sooth your throat and help combat the cold.

  • Try a pleasant tasting, easy-to-take homeopathic remedy that temporarily relieves croup and barking cough. This product is also excellent and reputedly safe for babies and children.

Home Remedies for a Cough: Uncongested Coughing

Dry coughs happen for a variety of reasons including dust allergies, exposure to air pollutants, and working in a dry building. In general, using vapor inhalation similar to a congested cough is one good natural remedy to ease a dry cough.

Other methods include:

  • Apple cider vinegar (1 tablet or 1 tbspn in warm water): sip on this when you feel the coughing about to begin.

  • Honey tea: Warm water with a heaping teaspoon of honey dissolved therein will sooth the itch of a dry cough.

  • Ferrum phosphoricum: a homeopathic cure for dry coughs and other carefully chosen herbs in therapeutic doses to provide rapid and effective relief and comfort in the throat and chest.

Natural Cough Suppressant and Seeing your Doctor

Natural cough remedies and suppressants may not be sufficient to cure what ails you. You may want to see your physician if:

  • your cold doesn’t get better after 3-4 days
  • you begin seeing yellow or green mucus (indicates infection)
  • you develop rashes, fever, or chest pains
  • you experience chills or night sweats

And don’t forget to get plenty of rest and eat right. Natural cough remedies include providing your body with the energy it needs to fight a cold effectively.
