Poor Foot Circulation

Leg Circulation Problems

Poor foot circulation is a health issue; poor blood circulation in legs is most often caused by illness (such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hardening of the arteries, or varicose veins). What are the signs of poor circulation? Treat leg circulation problems effectively.

What are the Signs of Poor Circulation in Your Feet?

  • your foot or feet go to 'sleep': numbness or tingling in the foot;
  • your feet often feel cold;
  • your feet are pale in color, with a bluish tinge;
  • cramping in your calf muscles; while technically this is your leg (not your foot) this cramping is often a precursor to numbness in the feet or other poor leg circulation symptom;
  • healing of infections, cuts, blisters or sores is very slow, and in some extreme cases, the cuts do not heal.

What Causes Poor Blood Circulation in Legs?

Your body must efficiently circulate blood through your body: that's how oxygen and nutrients are delivered. The blood also circulates the wastes and toxins out of your body.

Foot and leg circulation problems are most often caused by underlying medical issues such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes and other issues such as lifestyle behaviors (smoking, overweight, poor diet, lack of exercise, sitting in a position that restricts effective circulation).

Treating Foot and Leg Circulation Problems

First, be preventative, particularly if you have already been diagnosed with a health issue like diabetes:

  • Eating healthy foods: high fibre and low fat;
  • Drink lots of water - a least 8 glasses of water;
  • Exercise regularly;
  • Ensure that you maintain a healthy weight;
  • If you smoke, quit!

If you are already experiencing poor foot circulation problems, then you need to take some additional steps:

  • See your medical doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Take a low dose aspirin to keep the blood flowing - only with your doctor's approval
  • Limit (or eliminate) caffeine, salt, sugar and alcohol.
  • If diabetes is the cause of your circulation issues make sure that you are properly managing your diabetes and insulin levels.
  • Make sure that you move around regularly - particularly if you sit in a cramped position
  • Elevate your feet for half hour intervals - particularly if your feet start swelling.
  • Take nutritional supplements like omega 3 fish oils and garlic - both are known to improve circulation.
