Sore Throat Symptoms

Including Chronic Sore Throat

There are many sore throat symptoms; from dry sore throat, chronic sore throat, sore throat and fever, to sore throat on one side only. The symptoms of sore throat can be indicators of other illness.

Symptoms of Sore Throat

What are some common sore throat symptoms? After all, not all sore throats are the same. For example, you might have a dry sore throat, sore throat and fever, chronic sore throat, or a sore throat on one side.

The underlying commonality in these examples is that in each case your throat will feel sore and uncomfortable. Symptoms of a sore throat commonly include pain, sometimes itchiness, and difficulties in swallowing. Most people find their throat feels worst in first thing in the morning and tends to ease as the day goes on.

Because most often sore throats are typically viral in nature (akin to colds), taking antibiotics won't do any good. By comparison, bacterial infections caused by streptococci (also known more commonly as Strep throat) can be treated with antibiotics in the hopes that the condition doesn't worsen (rheumatic fever).

Symptoms for Strep throat include white dots in your throat, a fever over 101 degrees, and swollen glands. Strep usually doesn't develop with the common cold.

By the way, you don't always have to be sick to have symptoms of sore throat. Very dry air can make your throat very cranky. Most people experience this in cold climates where winter results in dry-air heating. If you sleep with your mouth open at night, you can wake up with a very dry, scratchy and potentially sore throat. Tea or another beverage should sooth this condition.

Allergies and Sore Throat

Another condition that can result in sore throats is an allergy. Allergies can effect the sinuses (causing dripping) and tonsils (which become inflamed). Honey and lemon are time-honored reliefs for this type of sore throat; as is gargling with warm salt water. Other alternatives include using a humidifier, sucking on cough drops, or taking a mild pain medication.

Most sore throat symptoms are not serious. However, if the fever remains over 101; if you notice pus in the throat; develop a rash; have other illnesses simultaneously, or begin to have trouble breathing, it's best to see a physician as soon as possible.
