Stress and Chest Pain: What Does It Mean?

Chest Pain Stress? What Should You Do?

Stress and chest pain can happen anytime. Find natural ways to deal with chest pain stress and learn effective stress management activity.

Chest Pain Stress

A chest pain stress can affect anyone at anytime, and while it’s pretty scary when it happens to you, take comfort in knowing that these types of chest pains are not always heart related; in fact, many times it is related to stress.

You see stress affects your overall health in many ways that you might not even realize. In fact, a famous Swedish study linked stress and chest pain to generalized anxiety disorder symptoms, depression, and other mood disorder symptoms,

What Is Chest Pain Stress?

What is chest pain stress and how serious is it? Well, according to Charles E. Chambers, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at University of Pennsylvania and a cardiologist at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania:

  • "Though we must always consider the worst, there are over 50 possible causes of chest pain, many of which have nothing to do with the heart and are not at all life threatening ...In general, a sudden jab of pain, a dull, lingering ache, a burning feeling or a sensation that changes when you shift your upper body is not cause for panic. In those instances, doctors can usually rule out a heart disease problem or one that needs immediate emergency treatment".

So, how do you know the difference between a stress related chest pain and a real heart attack? Well, if you’re engaging in an activity (like during a walk or exercise) and you suddenly feel pressure, tightness or sense of squeezing directly behind, or to the left of, your breastbone...and possibly a radiating feeling up and down your arms, or back, neck or even around your jaw; it could be a heart related problem like angina.

If you have an experience like this always contact your doctor immediately to rule out any serious problems. Note: if you are feeling any type of chest pains you need to visit your medical doctor for an assessment. Once properly diagnosed, discuss natural treatment options and alternatives with your doctor.

Stress and Chest Pain - Stress Management Activity

Once you’ve determined that your chest pains are due to stress (again always see your doctor when you’re experiencing chest pains to rule out any serious health issues), there are ways to manage your stress and help you cope.

  • Identify the source of your stress: Look at your habits. For example, do you procrastinate until it’s too late and then stress out over getting things done? Keep a journal or list of things that need to be accomplished such as tasks, bills, home projects; and check them off as you finish them. This will help take the burden off your mind, and will also give you a sense of accomplishment. Understand that to reduce your stress, you need to gain control of your life.
  • Exercise: Try to get into the habit of daily exercise; even if it’s just a walk around a couple of blocks with the dog. Try to get some fresh air, exercise and most important sunshine daily. Studies show that just a few minutes a day of sunshine helps increase serotonin levels in the brain. Helping you to feel calmer, less depressed, and sleep better.
