Symptoms Before a Stroke

Ways to Prevent a Stroke

If you identify the symptoms before a stroke; you may be able to minimize the impact. What are the early warning signs of stroke? What are some effective ways to prevent a stroke?

Symptoms Before a Stroke

The symptoms before a stroke are often characterized as mini-strokes; they are similar to a stroke but last less than five minutes, most often do not damage the brain, and are to be considered one of a number of early warning signs of stroke. If you recognize a mini stroke, go to the hospital or get to your medical doctor as soon as possible.

These mini strokes are called transient ischemic attack or TIA, warning stroke or mini stroke. They are most often caused by blood clots that create blockages of blood flow to the brain or caused by the narrowing of arteries to the brain.

Early Warning Signs of Stroke

In recent studies, about 25 percent of people who had an ischemic stroke had experienced a TIA up to seven days prior to their stroke. If you can identify those early warning mini strokes, and take medical action, you have a better chance of minimizing and/or surviving a more serious stroke.

If you experience the following symptoms before a stroke, take action:

  • severe headaches
  • unsteadiness and/or lack of coordination
  • vision is blurred, unfocused
  • difficulty forming words and putting sentences together
  • sudden, short term memory loss
  • numbness on one side of your body: face, arm, leg
  • confusion

If any one, or more, of these symptoms come on suddenly, see your doctor immediately.

Best Ways to Prevent a Stroke

Maintain a healthy lifestyle! Eat a healthy heart diet and ensure that you reduce your salt, fats, sugars and refined carbohydrates. Exercise regularly and consistently. Hydrate your body – drink water! If you smoke, stop. Limit your alcohol. Manage and control your body weight.

Visit your doctor regularly and make sure you have your blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart rate checked. If you have diabetes, you need to manage it and control your blood sugar – you have a higher risk of heart and stroke issues

Note: Check with your Doctor if you are on medication (for example, you do not want to over-dose on medications and foods with blood thinning properties) before taking these.

Some Foods that Have Beneficial HealthProperties:

  • Green tea: good antioxidant properties that also have a good blood thinning effect;
  • Carrots and Spinach: the beta carotene appears to be a good preventative; eat these vegetables weekly (at least);
  • Bananas and cantelope are rich in potassium;
  • Broccoli has blood thinning properties;
  • Blueberries and cranberries: both have very good antioxidant properties

Since strokes are caused by blood clots or narrowing of the arteries (due to build up of bad cholesterol) the goal is to keep your blood flowing and your arteries open!

Talk to your medical doctor about the best stroke prevention options for you. Then take responsibility and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The lifestyle adjustments, such as eating healthy foods and quitting smoking, you make will help reduce your risk of stroke.
