Causes of Bad Breath

Before we get to the treating bad breath remedies, let’s take a look at what causes that rancid bad breath.

In most cases, bad breath (halitosis) is caused by the presence of oral bacteria. There can be, however, other factors that influence the odor associated with one's breath and, in fact, the quality of a person's breath will ultimately depend on a number of different variables.

Food. We have all experienced some type of food, that after we ate it, we noticed a different kind of smell coming from our mouth. Two of the most common foods to cause bad breath are garlic and onions.

As our digestive system begins to break down the food we have eaten into its component molecules, these molecules are absorbed into the circulatory system to be distributed throughout the rest of the body. As the blood travels through the lungs, some of these molecules will be released into them. This could result in the release of a rancid smell as we exhale.

Even though this can cause a strong unpleasant odor, it is usually temporary and goes away on its own.

Smoking. Smoking in itself can be damaging to your whole body, but it can cause bad breath. A great part of the bad breath is caused by the tar, nicotine and other foul smelling substances in a cigarette that get absorbed into your teeth and oral soft tissues. As a result, your breath could become increasingly worse if you don’t spend extra attention on your teeth.

Sinuses. Unfortunately, my son has this issue and I am very much aware of the bad breath it causes! Allergies can create a postnasal drip that deposits onto the back of a person’s tongue. This discharge does not usually smell or taste good. Even worse, a person with allergies will usually not be able to breath through their nose, forcing them to release that foul smell through their mouth.

Dentures. The dentures you wear can play a big part on how your breath smells. A simple test for yourself is to take your dentures, place them in a plastic baggie for 10-15 minutes, open the bag and smell. This is pretty similar to what others smell.

Untreated cavities. If you have a cavity or an infected tooth and if you do not treat it, the tooth decay will likely begin to give off a bad odor and contribute to bad breath.

Treating Bad Breath

The good part is how simple it is to get rid of that bad breath. Here are 10 possible ways for treating bad breath problems using bad breath home remedies:

  1. Water Please. Soda, coffee and alcoholic drinks rank towards the top for beverages that cause bad breath. Try to drink more water to create a more pleasant breath experience.

  2. Deli Meat. Deli meat can leave oils behind after you have eaten. Foods such as pizza, salami and pepperoni can cause bad breath. Try not to eat processed meats.

  3. What Kind of Cheese? Certain types of cheeses are called strong for a reason. Stay away from strong cheeses if you want to keep an acceptable breath.

  4. Toothbrush. Carry a toothbrush wherever you go. When you brush your teeth, also brush the inside of your mouth. This will allow you the opportunity to clean up and freshen up regularly, particularly if you have a bad breath problem.

  5. Brush Your Tongue. If you look at a tongue real close under a microscope, you will see your tongue covered with little hair like projections. Under these projections is room to for plaque and bacteria and some of the things we eat, which could cause bad breath.

  6. Eat, Eat, Eat. Bad breath can be caused by not eating. One of the side effects of not eating is the bad breath. But eat foods that are healthy for your body.

  7. Use home remedies for toothache and go see a dentist to ensure that your cavity or infection is properly treated! (This can be much more serious than treating bad breath: you can lose a tooth or develop a much more serious infection if you leave it untreated.)

  8. Floss. Every time you brush your teeth, don’t forget to floss. You should stick with a great floss like Glide Floss as it will help getting in between those teeth easier and removing that nasty debris. If you let debris and bacteria sit on your teeth, over a period of time, you will start to get bad breath, so floss your teeth.

  9. Eat Your Parsley. Parsley adds more green to your lunch plate; it’s also a breath-saver. Parsley can freshen your breath naturally. Why stop at parsley? Try coriander, basil, rosemary, thyme, wintergreen, cardamom seeds, cinnamon bark, clove, fennel or anise seeds to freshen your breath.

  10. Chew Gum. Treating bad breath by chewing mint gum is just a quick fix, but can useful for a short interview or a short ride in a compact car.

  11. Eat Three Meals A Day. Not only can eating the wrong foods cause bad breath, but so can not eating. If you are on a diet or fasting, be warned that bad breath may be a side effect. Bad breath treatments need to include eating regularly.
