What is Metabolic Syndrome

Get a Basic Metabolic Panel for Accurate Diagnosis

What is metabolic syndrome? Will a basic metabolic panel provide enough information about the syndrome or is a complete metabolic panel necessary? Is metabolic acidosis part of the syndrome?

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of disorders, most often related to overweight and obesity, aging, stress, lack of exercise and fitness. People with metabolic syndrome have an increased risk of developing diabetes and/or heart disease, particularly of the syndrome is not treated.

Basic Metabolic Panel or Complete Metabolic Panel

Symptoms of metabolic syndrome include fasting hyperglycemia; high levels of triglycerides; high LDL cholesterol; obesity - particularly in the waist and abdomen area (i.e. a body mass index (BMI) that is greater than 30 kg/mē; and high blood pressure.

Testing for metabolic syndrome includes conducting a basic metabolic panel that includes testing for glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide/bicarbonate, chloride, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. This panel of 8 tests provides your doctor with information on the health of your kidneys, blood sugar, electrolyte and acid/base balance. Results that are considered abnormal (too high or too low) are indicators of potential health risks.

Preventing or Treating Metabolic Syndrome

  • increase your daily exercise: a minimum of 30 minutes a day.
  • decrease your calorie intake and balance your foods nutritiously: vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, and high carbohydrate grains.
  • there is some debate about the effect of increased consumption of dairy products (milk and cheese) on the syndrome (some suggestion of 1 pint of milk = a reduced risk of about 50%).
  • under your doctor's direction, you may need drug treatment: to lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, or raise HDL cholesterol; ACE inhibitors for hypertension; and more.

Metabolic Acidosis

Metabolic acidosis occurs when your body produces too much acid and/or when your kidneys do not remove or eliminate enough of the acid formed in your body.

The most common types of metabolic acidosis include diabetic acidosis (where ketone bodies build up during unmanaged diabetes); lactic acidosis - a secondary result from cancer, alcohol, liver failure, heart failure, and more; and hypercholoremic acidosis - a result of extreme loss of sodium bicarbonate.

If your pH is under 7.1, you need immediate medical attention. Any issue with pH levels is serious and needs to be diagnosed and treated under the care of your medical doctor.

Treatment for Metabolic Syndrome

Once you understand 'what is metabolic syndrome', you need to start treating for it. Speak to your medical doctor about what you can do to treat, and to prevent, this syndrome. You can help to balance your metabolic rate with a natural old home remedy: green tea. Three to five cups of green tea per day is recommended, however remember that green tea is caffeinated and do not drink it too late in the day. Green tea is recognized as being good for your metabolism: try it and see for yourself!

Native Remedies also has an all-natural product called Insulate Plus, which helps to regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels, to improve circulation, to decrease food cravings, and helps to encourage a healthy digestive system.

In 3-6 weeks, along with a diet for metabolic syndrome and a regular and frequent exercise program, you can begin to see improvements. Check it out (along with the ingredients list and money-back warranty) here.
